Abstract

This research determined the phytoremediation capacity of Hydrocotyle ranunculoides L. f. in waters contaminated by heavy metals (Cu, Mn, and Al) in the Pacchantay stream. Spot sampling of contaminated water was carried out. The species was adapted in a hydroponic system for a month, receiving nutrition weekly with macro- and micronutrient solutions. A control group was defined, which received dechlorinated water and three groups, 5 L. each of contaminated water. 20 units of Hydrocotyle ranunculoides L.F. were added. to each bucket, and phytoremediation was carried out for one month. The concentration of heavy metals was determined (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) in water and plants before and after the phytoremediation process. The Tukey test was performed with statistical significance level p: <0.05. The root presented the highest pre- and post-treatment concentration for all metals. After treatment, metal concentrations decreased in leaf, root and stem with a significant difference depending on parts of the plant, treatments, and metals. The greatest phytoremediation capacity of the species in decreasing order was for Cu (98.97 %) > Mn (73.01 %) > Al (59.40 %). The aquatic plant Hydrocotyle ranunculoides L. f. It has good phytoremediation potential.
