SEMEN QUALITY VARIABLES AND PRESENCE OF LEUKOCYTES IN INFERTILE PATIENTS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Seminal sepsis produces variations in sperm parameters and in seminal quality, being linked to male infertility in patients with leukocytospermia. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between the variation in sperm parameters and the microorganisms isolated in patients who attended the Infertile Couple Care Program at the “Ana Betancourt de Mora” Teaching Provincial Hospital in 2020. The study was descriptive, observational, cross-sectional, and retrospective. Databases of 299 patients containing a spermogram and sperm culture diagnosis were used. 42.8% of patients with leukocytospermia were found, nine of them with bacterial growth for a 5.3% positivity: α-hemolytic Streptococcus, Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, Enterococcus sp., Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter aerogens. No significant differences were found between leukocytospermia and the variation of seminal parameters, but various effects on seminal quality were observed in qualitative variables, mobility, and concentration. The detection of alterations in seminal parameters may indicate changes in the functional capacity of the spermatozoa, due to seminal sepsis and increased peroxidation during infection
